About

America’s public and private forest lands support multiple uses and economic opportunities, are essential places to recreate outdoors, and provide clean water, air and wildlife habitat. The ForestService manages 193 million acres of public lands that are critical for the communities around them, partners with states, tribes, communities and private landowners to support land and resource management, works to protect communities from wildfire and restore fire-adapted ecosystems, and leads essential forest R&D. Its mission is “caring for the land and serving people.”

Forest Service employees and an invaluable network of forest stewards – including state, tribal and local governments, private landowners, community-based organizations, conservation and other non-profits, the forest products industry, academic institutions, and others – deliver the USFS mission, stewarding public and private lands in rural and urban communities across the country.

Recent actions, including mass terminations of dedicated public servants and freezing or reversing essential funding for partners and projects, create immediate risks for:

  • Wildfire preparedness, response and recovery, making people and communities less safe;

  • Outdoor recreation opportunities, impacting quality of life and the recreation economy;

  • The health, conservation and restoration of our national forests and grasslands, water and watersheds, air, and habitat for wildlife;

  • Multiple uses supported by national forests, including impacts to the forest products industry;

  • The ability to provide technical assistance and support for private forest landowners;

  • Funding going to state, tribal and local governments and NGOs for essential programs;

  • Tribal trust and treaty responsibilities and tribal co-stewardship;

  • Critical forestry research and preserving access to data;

  • Jobs and economic opportunity, especially in rural communities;

  • Investments in youth and workforce development;

  • The ability to maintain critical infrastructure like bridges and roads; and so much more.
